Design Engineer

Job Description:

Collaborate with clients, owners, and other design disciplines to produce coordinated drawings and specifications for pricing and construction.  Design mechanical systems that meet code, standards of the industry, and the basis of design/owner project requirements.  During pre-construction of larger projects, supports the Lead Engineer in producing completed design documents.  During construction, supports the Lead Engineer and project management.

Essential Functions / Major Responsibilities:

  • Support lead engineers on large design projects
  • Support lead engineers and business development in responding to Requests for Proposals (RFP)
  • Assist the business development team in the procurement of new work, including schematic-level designs for budget pricing and participating in project interviews
  • Work with clients, owners and other design trades to produce coordinated design documents
  • Provide a written definition of the HVAC and plumbing systems – Basis of Design
  • Responsible for completion of design documents (specifications, construction drawing sets, basis of design)
  • Coordinate project schedules with other Engineers and the Engineering Manager
  • Document design revisions and scope change issues using the Engineering Issues Log
  • Provide construction support
  • Review shop drawings and submittals
  • Respond to field questions
  • Ensure design changes are documented and issued to project management
  • Perform regular on-site reviews and produces engineering construction reports
  • Assist Project Management during closeout of work (commissioning, as-built drawings)
  • Support the special projects, energy services, and service groups with design services and technical assistance

  • Knowledge of International Codes, and NFPA standards as related to HVAC, plumbing, and medical gas systems
  • Calculate building services (water, waste, storm, gas)
  • Ability to properly size equipment such as chillers, cooling towers, air handling units, fans, pumps, boilers, water heaters and medical gas systems
  • Ability to edit company Master Specifications for project specific requirements
  • Ability to read and understand drawings provided by other disciplines including architectural, structural, civil and electrical. Problem solving/decision making - able to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions
  • Ability to effectively multi-task with attention to detail
  • Flexibility to change gears and re-prioritize tasks under pressure and to similarly motivate staff to do the same
  • Good organizational skills
  • Willing to work with other employees in a team
  • AutoCAD experience – ability to plot drawings and make minor revisions to existing drawings
  • Computer skills – competent with spreadsheets and word processor programs

Education and/or Experience:

  • Minimum of 0-7 years’ experience in plumbing and piping systems design
  • Mechanical Engineering degree
