Lead Design Engineer

Job Description:

The Lead Design Engineer will lead collaboration with clients, owners, other design disciplines, and UMC design engineers, project managers & project executives, to produce coordinated drawings and specifications for pricing, permitting and construction. Design mechanical systems and provide design/build construction documentation. Expertise emphasis is in the areas of Healthcare, High- Rise Construction, Infrastructure (e.g. data centers, district energy, wastewater treatment), and High- Performing Buildings.

Essential Functions / Major Responsibilities:

  • Provide design management for projects, to clearly identify and clarify scope, schedule, budget and expectations that meet project requirements
  • Mentor and train less experienced engineers
  • Assist the business development team in the procurement of new work, including schematic-level or redline designs for budget pricing and participating in project interviews
  • Provide in-house engineering support for project executives, project managers, field staff, estimating and for UMC’s lines of business including Environmental & Energy Services, Service, Industrial, Major Projects and Special Projects
  • Manage production of design documentation necessary for a complete set of Construction Documents, and support the build phase
  • Provide quality documentation through the use of 2D and 3D drawings, calculations, memos, letters, narratives, and specifications to ensure that the design intent is fully documented and communicated to the project team
  • Coordinate design information in a timely manner with the design team, owner, and general contractor
  • Design calculations, energy modeling, envelope load calculations, sustainability evaluation, system diagrams, equipment selections, and material specifications
  • Produce documentation that complies with all applicable codes, standards, and owner project requirements
  • Maintain the Design Issues Log to ensure design, pre-construction, and construction teams have current information, and that all issues identified during design are tracked to completion
  • Coordinate design schedules with the design team
  • Track budgets for engineering effort
  • Manage submittal and shop drawing review, and RFI responses
  • Ensure design changes are documented and issued to project management
  • Perform regular on-site reviews and produce engineering construction reports
  • Attend regular design meetings with the project team and OAC meetings as necessary
  • Regular attendance and promptness are considered part of each employee's essential job functions
  • Coordinate staffing needs and manpower forecast with the Engineering Manager
  • Support the Engineering Process Improvements Committee
  • Perform Quality Control reviews as needed
  • Candidate in training for Engineering Manager

  • Read and understand drawings provided by other disciplines including architectural, structural, civil and electrical
  • Problem solving/decision making - able to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions
  • Ability to edit company Master Specifications for project specific requirements
  • Ability to effectively multi-task with attention to detail
  • Flexibility to change gears and re-prioritize tasks under pressure and to similarly motivate staff to do the same
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Willing to work with other employees in a team
  • AutoCAD and Revit experience – ability to plot drawings and make minor revisions to existing drawings
  • Computer skills – advanced skills with spreadsheets, word processor programs, load calculation programs (such as Trace 700, Elite, HAP), energy modeling capabilities
  • Sustainability Skills – LEED project experience, sustainability best practices
  • Control System – knowledge of control systems and the ability to write sequences, create diagrams and points lists necessary to define control scope
  • Ability to work productively with little technical guidance or supervision

Education and/or Experience:

  • BS Degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering
  • 12 years experience in HVAC, Plumbing and Piping Systems Design. Degree preferred; 17 years without a degree
  • Valid Driver’s License and satisfactory driving record
  • Professional Engineer certification preferred (WA State preferred)
