Leading by example means it starts within UMC. We’re excited to be creating a plan to decarbonize our fleet with kickass cleaner-burning trucks. We’re also exploring innovative, low-carbon concrete to use at future client sites and have begun empowering our employees to track Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions at both our offices and client sites. And we’re proud to have been the very first of our industry to join the MEP 2040 Challenge, a group driving metrics to research, track, and reduce operational and embodied carbon in mechanical equipment and construction materials. From President to Energy Engineer and Project Executive, all branches of UMC are involved in MEP 2040 working groups, paving a way for engineers to achieve net-zero carbon in their projects – operational and embodied. This work ranges from creating free industry tools to track and compare refrigerant chemicals’ global warming potential to working with manufacturers on embodied carbon in mechanical equipment. We’re helping level the playing field so the MEP industry can compete on low–carbon performance – UMC was early in this collaboration, but it’s no wonder that many of our peers have now joined as well. This is a broad effort where competition among UMC and our peers means the world wins!
Beyond our own walls, the UMC team works closely with clients to design buildings optimizing energy efficiency first and using renewables where available. The best philosophy to save energy is to provide efficient designs that avoid using it in the first place. We help clients track their energy use through existing tools like Portfolio Manager and Power BI. We have developed solutions that harness the power of the sun, wind, water, and heat from the ground to match and optimize what the landscape allows. Our team has designed and installed district energy systems and solar panels as well as developing a geothermal loop that provides clean energy to homes and businesses. Customers are asking for this expertise; it’s very good business that we can help.
