VP OPERATIONS

I am an engineer and a tinkerer. I love the challenge of fixing things that are broken—and improving things that are working—but can be better. My job at UMC is to educate, mentor and encourage our amazing operations staff, as well as to provide the tools and remove the roadblocks for our equally amazing field leads. I’m most proud of UMC’s ongoing work at Fred Hutch and SCCA—every job has a purpose and a measure of satisfaction, and the higher the purpose, the greater the satisfaction. I value the teamwork and hard work of my colleagues here at UMC. As a company, we are committed to adapting and evolving with the needs of our clients and the industry.

PRESIDENT

Variety. Talent. Tenacity. Creativity. These describe the environment where I thrive. Whether it’s strategizing to solve a project challenge, consulting with a customer to take some of the mystery out of the pipes and ducts traversing their buildings or hustling to save a client the angst of a catastrophic equipment failure, I love the challenges that are around every corner. The icing on the cake is the people I get to work with—I love to make people smile. If I can help someone have a slightly better day, whether client, coworker, family member or unnamed recipient of our charitable work, I’ve made an impact on my little piece of the world. The can-do attitude, adaptability, talent and drive of the people at UMC gives me confidence for good things in our future.

MAJOR PROJECTS MANAGER

I’m a far cry away from those pre-college days when I commuted to work in a dune buggy and installed chain link fencing. But my career path from then through general contracting, civil engineering design, mechanical contracting to my leadership role at UMC all have one thing in common—I am learning new things all the time. Since 2000, with my work on large industrial projects like the Brightwater Treatment Plant to the significant commercial construction projects I am involved in today, UMC has opened a whole new world to me. I enjoy the journey of discovery, education and critical thinking to get to solutions that work. I relish in the endless possibilities this dynamic, ever-changing industry holds. One thing I know for sure, we can’t bury our heads in the sand; we must embrace whatever the future brings.

SAFETY DIRECTOR

Taking mission impossible to mission successfully completed inspires me every day. My role as coach and leader keeping our team focused on safety, helping assure the health and well-being of our employees and friends, and sharing ideas that enact change for the overall betterment of the construction industry is truly the best job I’ve ever had. There is nothing like the feeling that you’re helping protect the lives of hundreds of people and the thousands more that depend on them. I’m optimistic about the future of our business and our number one value, safety, knowing that we have a capable, dynamic team driving toward our vision along with an impeccable track record of success.

CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER

I’ve had a long career of taking businesses to new heights in revenue and equity. I thrive on working to drive change and process improvements that make companies better. For me, it’s really a success strategy (both business and personal), because there are no guarantees that what works today, will work tomorrow. At UMC, I love the people dimension of my work. As leaders here, we are rooted in a culture that puts people first. Clients, employees, building users—it all boils down to working for and with people. With our strong focus on client and employee satisfaction, our willingness to take calculated risks, and our booming Northwest economy, I’m bullish on UMC as we go into our next century of business.

Having the opportunity to lead this incredible company into the future is at once a daunting and exciting role. I enjoy the opportunity to tackle future challenges by learning from the ones today. I’ve grown with UMC since 1989 and had a hand in successfully completing so many interesting projects, it’s impossible to nail down a favorite. The best part of my role is tapping into the amazing talent at UMC, charting the course and guiding UMC to adapt and overcome challenges. There is only so much we can predict in this world of unprecedented change; but with our preparation, in addition to our ability to quickly adapt, I’m confident that our team will lead UMC successfully into another 100 years.

David Malone

David Malone, PE

DIRECTOR OF PRECONSTRUCTION

Since my first day at UMC in 1992, three things have always held true—it never gets boring because no two projects are ever the same, there is always a solution when common vision and the right people are in the room, and creativity, experience and expertise surround me on a daily basis. These truths make my job challenging and rewarding. From my experience working on out-of-the-box solutions for Federal Center South with one of the best teams I’ve ever worked with, to the creative solutions we brought to the Amazon Doppler project, I’ve enjoyed the collaboration, challenges and excitement our projects bring. The future is bright because of the talent and drive of the people here at UMC.

DIRECTOR STRATEGIC DEVELOPMENT

What gets me up in the morning? Adding structure to what at times feels like chaos, and, then methodically working the challenges to resolution. Knowing you’ve found a way through, around, over or under to find a solution provides great satisfaction and accomplishment for me. I enjoy connecting with new people, ideas, businesses and technologies while finding unique ways of transforming our business and inspiring others while doing so. Since I started working at UMC in 1997, my optimism for the future continues to grow. I look at what we’ve accomplished and see all the new faces, ideas and ways of doing our business—all have enhanced UMC as we embrace change, challenge and growth.
